In the heart of Keaʻau, Hawaiʻi, we visit Noelani Mengel on her ʻāina to talk story about what it means to be a second-generation Kānaka raised in California while remaining deeply rooted in Hawaiʻi. Together, we explore her journey as a mahiʻai (farmer), navigating culture and identity through ʻāina work, kalo, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, shaped by her background in permaculture and Indigenous food systems.
We also dive into her manaʻo on kuleana, community, and the importance of creating spaces where Kānaka can thrive, both in Hawaiʻi and on Moku Honu.
